A Monument to Sugar

This edible monument was created for the weekend festival, Balboa Park, December Nights, December 5th and 6th, 2003. The monument was a 12-foot high tower, installed at the entrance to the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park, and built from donated products - soft drinks, candy, chocolates, sweet cereals and baked goods.

This monument was inspired by the edible food monuments based on the legend of Cuccagna, a paradise on earth in medieval folklore. During the Italian Renaissance, artists designs these temporary structures made of food which were given to the public to devour while the king watched from above.
